Local police deserve community’s respect

The editor:

I am writing in response to a letter in The Morehead News regarding our local police force’s loitering habits.

I must say, it did not go unnoticed by me that the letter ran in the same edition of the paper where the work of MPD officers was the subject of two front-page stories. I also noticed that the “On The Record” section was nearly two pages.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I find it insulting to say that our local police force is not a professional organization held accountable for its actions. Our officers are trained at a highly accredited police academy and attend training and in-service functions every year. In addition to their regular 40-hour shifts, many of them put in overtime every week. On top of working extra hours, they spend their days off in court, handling casework and testifying before juries. I should know; I’m married to one of those ‘boys-in-blue’ and I can tell you just how much time away from home a career in police work requires.

I hope that most of our local businesses would be happy to have any of Morehead’s police agencies as customers. I also hope that the community doesn’t fail to notice how few trips they can make through town without seeing red and blue lights somewhere in the city.

Before anyone jumps to any conclusions about the professionalism and work ethic of our police department, I only ask that you speak to someone at the department about their activities week to week. I’m willing to bet most people would be surprised at just how much really goes on in Morehead, and how much more DOESN’T go on because you DO have a very competent police agency in your city. I am personally grateful to all of Morehead’s police agencies for the services they provide.
