Speak up for animal rights

The editor:

A lady stated that we as citizens need to speak up and help innocent animals that are being neglected and abused. I have seen firsthand what happens to these innocent creatures at the hands of uncaring pet owners. Many people believe animals are just things, that they have no feelings. It’s like animals are just possessions that they can treat roughly and throw them away when they have outgrown their usefulness. One of my own little dogs was mistreated before I got her. When I look into her little face, I can't imagine making her cry on purpose.

Recently I contacted the authorities about a gentleman I witnessed abusing his little dog. He would tie her up outside for long periods without food, water, and shelter from the sun. I also witnessed this person picking up this little dog and throwing her into the house. As bad as this is, the man still has possession of the dog. I am sure the authorities warned him but what is it going to take to get people to wake up and realize these animals do have feelings and this kind of treatment scars them. My little dog still cowers if she thinks we are angry. She will tuck her tail and hide if a cabinet door is shut too hard or if we raise our voices. As long as I tell her I am sorry she will not hide. I have had her for nine years and she is quite pampered. A lot of dogs and cats aren't that lucky.

What good is a law if it isn't enforced? I thought Romeo's Law would stiffen the penalties against animal cruelty. Doesn't Rowan County have to follow the rules? Or are there counties exempt from the laws? Animals cannot speak for themselves so we as pet owners and animal lovers must speak for them. Wake up Rowan County.
