Cigarettes can cause wildfires

The editor:

This morning as I drove to work, I saw a woman in a car in front of me throw her cigarette out of her car window. Normally this irritates me, because cigarettes are non-biodegradable trash and, along with all of the other litter people so carelessly throw out of their cars, it mars the natural beauty of eastern Kentucky. But this morning it really infuriated me. We have a burn ban in the county because of the drought. The leaves and grass are so dry that it’s like a tinderbox. This cigarette was tossed near homes and the woods. If that lit cigarette had landed in the grass next to the road, it could have easily started yet another forest fire in eastern Kentucky.

I urge those of you who smoke to please think before you toss a cigarette (or any trash, for that matter) out of your car window. Be considerate of the firefighters who risk their lives putting out forest fires started by accidental arsonists, as well as the homeowners who could lose everything they own in a forest fire. Appreciate the beauty that you are lucky to have all around you. Can you imagine what the hills around Morehead would look like if there was a forest fire? Not only would there be the loss of timber and the revenue that it generates, but environmental damage as well. Wildlife, including turkey and deer, lose habitat and food. Forest fires destroy plant life, which increases soil erosion, which in turn increases sedimentation in creeks. This further damages fish and other aquatic wildlife. It takes years for a forest ecosystem to recover. All because one person doesn’t want to use an ashtray.

By the way, if a fire started on the side of the road Monday morning on Highway 60 near Hayes Crossing, I have the license plate number.
