Foot bridge project needs community support

There has been a lot of news lately about Morehead’s “Bridge to Nowhere” – the foot bridge located next to the bypass built by the local Daniel Boone Rails to Trails group. Most likely, the bridge will be coming down and we wanted to explain what has happened.

There was a mistake made in obtaining the proper permit before the bridge was placed in its present position. This was a result of multiple factors. There had to be coordination between our local group, the City of Morehead, the Department of Transportation, Division of Water and licensed engineers and probably because we are not professionals, there was confusion.

Rails to Trails is a nationwide movement to convert old railroad beds into bike trails. Our local Rails to Trails group has been working on developing these trails in Morehead and Rowan County for over ten years. We have been quietly raising money, talking to businesses and individuals about easements and designing the trail.

The bridge was built with a small Recreational Trail Grant to local governments and required in-kind donations. Volunteers donated their expertise, time and money to put the bridge up as a visible start to the trail. The location highlighted the need for a safe bike route in this area of Morehead where many children ride bikes to the city pool and now can enjoy the multiplex movie theatre.

Our group is still enthused that eventually there will be a bike trail through Morehead and some portion of the county but we need the support of the entire community. We are trying to fulfill one of the goals of the New City Initiative and projects like this make good sense to improve the health and well being of all. Projects like this need coordination and cooperation from all the above entities and in particular we need help from city and state governments.

No one is to blame and we hope this slight bump in the road will eventually serve as a bridge to more support for this worthwhile venture.
