The editor:
Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. The day was created in 1949, and was a result of the consolidation of the military services in the Department of Defense. It was intended to replace the separate Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Days.
President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank military members for their patriotic service in support of country.
Armed Forces Day is celebrated by parades, open houses, receptions and air shows. The purpose of Armed Forces day is to honor Americans serving in the five services - the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard. By celebrating this day, public understanding of the role of the military in a democratic society is increased, and a day is provided in which to honor and acknowledge the people serving in the Armed Forces of the United States.
The debt that we owe to you, the defenders of freedom, can never fully be repaid.
Thank you
