Fighting cancer

The editor:

This year in Kentucky, more than 22,800 people will hear the words ‘you have cancer’ and nearly 9,400 people will die from the disease. These statistics are why I am an American Cancer Society Relay For Life volunteer. The American Cancer Society is committed to finding a cure for cancer. The dollars raised by the American Cancer Society through Relay For Life support research, education, advocacy and patient support services.

On June 14, the Rowan County community has an opportunity to make a difference in the cancer fight by participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event at McBrayer Elementary School. This community event is a way for all of us to make a difference in the life of a cancer patient.

The American Cancer Society, since 1946, has given more than $3.1 billion to support cancer research. Because of this funding, cancer breakthroughs like chemotherapy, Pap tests, mammography, and Tamoxifen have been discovered and are saving lives.

These research discoveries benefit the people of Rowan County everyday. The money we raise for Relay For Life is helping to fund new research so we can find a cure for cancer; educate people in our community about early detection and prevention; enact laws that protect cancer patients; and help everyone in our community who has been touched by cancer.

Some of the patient support programs offered by the American Cancer Society include Look Good…Feel Better, Reach to Recovery, Man to Man, Road to Recovery, college scholarships, and most recently the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Lexington, Kentucky. In addition, the American Cancer Society provides wigs, turbans, and prosthetic items to cancer patients who are going through treatment.

The American Cancer Society also has a toll-free number (1-800-ACS-2345) that you can call 24 hours a day, seven days a week and talk to a specialist that can help provide you with cancer information. These American Cancer Society services and programs are possible because of the funds we raise through our Relay For Life event. Being an American Cancer Society volunteer allows me to make a difference in the fight against cancer. I hope you will join me along with others in our community at Rowan County’s Relay For Life event to help fight the war against cancer.
