Keep nursing home ombudsman with Legal Aid

The editor:

I'm writing to let the public know what is going on with funding for the Nursing Home Ombudsman program (Cheryl Barber) through Legal Aid of the Bluegrass.

Gateway ADD has been funding this program but currently has decided to keep the funding for themselves. If this happens, Cheryl will no longer have the position of Ombudsman. My problem with this decision is that the residents of nursing homes in the area will no longer have a voice and we need to try to make sure this does not happen. While my mother was in Life Care Center, I called both Cheryl and Dianna Reynolds (who previously held the position) with many different questions and issues I needed resolved concerning my mother. Both these women have done an exceptional job in this position and it is just so sad that soon there will be no one trained as Cheryl is to handle this position and speak for residents of nursing homes.

I'm really appalled at the decision that may have already been made unless the public takes a stand as I am. Please call either Jim Nickell (County Judge-executive) and/or David Perkins (Mayor of Morehead) to express your displeasure about this issue. Maybe if enough people respond things will stay as they are currently and Cheryl Barber will be able to keep her job and continue doing such a superb job!
