City needs impressive sign

The editor:

I read recently the fine article that Jack Ellis wrote on the signs at Morehead. He asked me to share this information with you. In August of 1953, I was assigned to March Air Force Base in Riverside, California.

The thing that impressed me most about Riverside was a large neon sign over the road of U.S. 60 leading into Riverside that said RIVERSIDE. I wrote Glen Lane, President of the Citizens Bank, and told him how nice the sign looked and it would sure be nice if Morehead could have a sign of each end of town on U.S.60, so people would know what town they passed through.

Several weeks later I received a letter from Mr. Lane informing me he had taken it up with the Board of Trade, which later became the Chamber of Commerce. He said they were buying the sign to be placed on each end of town and would cost $300.

Then he said, when you come home, if you are the train, sit on the left side and when you come around Brady Curve, look up and see the sign or if you arrive on the Greyhound Bus, sit up front and as you approach Brady Curve you will go right under it.

The signs were removed around 1970 when I-64 came through, and Morehead, being the progressive city that it is, needs an impressive sign.
