The assault of downtown parking lots

The editor:

Our downtown, once the economic and social heart of our community, has survived (barely) the construction of I-64, which resulted in our business center moving to the interstate. Many people have worked very hard to revitalize downtown; as a result improvements in downtown have been occurring. However, growing demands for parking have resulted in housing areas, green space, and retail locations being paved.

The most recent threats to downtown are the possible leaving of the Public Library, Rowan County Courthouse, and removal of more retail space for parking. The universal theme of these threats is parking lots. The planners of all of these individual projects need to cooperate and develop a partnership to construct a centralized parking garage between Main and First to serve downtown, campus, hospital, businesses, library and conference center. Parking garages are expensive, but large amounts of funds are being spent to pave over land that can no longer be used as a tax base. In addition, the parking lots do not make for an attractive community. If all of the stakeholders (city, county, conference center, library, campus and hospital) pulled their resources together, a parking garage would be a more feasible option. The garage would preserve valuable green space, housing areas, and retail space, which are necessary for the short and long term benefit of our community.

Most importantly it would allow for two of our downtown anchors — the courthouse and library — to stay downtown. These anchors provide reasons for people to come downtown and support business located downtown. The importance of these anchors has been documented in numerous case studies. In short, I strongly urge our leaders to come together and build up not out and to provide an opportunity for downtown to be part of our lives.
