Community Cookout set for Aug. 15

A Morehead State fraternity is working with the Morehead-Rowan County Chamber of Commerce to host its second annual Freshmen Move-In Day Community Cookout Friday, Aug. 15.

“The event is sponsored by the chamber of commerce and Delta Pi Delta Fraternity,” said Stephen Potter, chairman of the cookout.

The cookout is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The fraternity provided the manpower to organize and host the event.

“Because of university regulations and the size of the event, we had to pass off the event to the chamber of commerce,” Potter said.

He said, when a lot of his fellow students came to Morehead for the first time, they did not know what Morehead had to offer. They did not know anything about the businesses in town except for the businesses close to the campus.

“Many students who come from out-of-state do not venture out into the community and do not know about what Morehead has to offer,” he said.

The event gives students and their parents opportunity to interact with businesses in the community.

“If students and parents have more interaction with the community, they get to see the bigger picture of what Morehead has to offer.”

Potter said there is a personal reason he has for doing this project.

“I really enjoy helping the community,” he said. “I like to volunteer in the community. It is a personal endeavor for me to succeed.”

“They came to the chamber to ask for help to solicit businesses for prizes and provide food items and for support to get all the things needed for a cookout,” said Chamber President Paul Hitchcock.

It shows good leadership to introduce students and families to MSU and the community, Hitchcock said.

“It is a big step for some of them coming to the university. It is a good example of leadership as a whole,” Hitchcock said.
