Readifest is Aug. 12

Getting school supplies will not be as challenging for some families of students who attend Rowan County Public Schools. The yearly school preparedness event Readifest will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the Carl Perkins Center’s main community room on Aug. 12.

“This is the fifteenth year doing the Readifest event,” said Rowan County Senior High School Youth Service Coordinator Carol Turner. “We collectively decided that this is the best way to adequately prepare our students for school.”

Turner said the event serves 700 to 800 family units. There will be various community agencies with information booths to benefit families. One of the booths will be the Adult Learning Center.

Each school will have bags of basic school supplies ready for each student. All parents have to do is tell a youth service volunteer or coordinator of the child’s grade and they will direct individuals where to get the supplies. Also there will be hair cut coupons given away for students.

“I am very tickled that we have received such good donations,” Turner said. “It’s a blessing to see student volunteers here to help because they could be doing something else . . . that is a true blessing.”

Families who attend the event will receive clothing, shoes, baby items, books, backpacks and items for the home. Donations were received by the truckloads.

“I’m always surprised at the generosity of the community,” said Family Youth Service Center Coordinator for Rodburn and Tilden Hogge schools Pat Richmond. “It always comes together. When we think we do not have enough, a truck comes in with a load of stuff in an hour and our donations seem to double and triple then.”

“I think it is a great opportunity for kids to get what they need for school,” said Laura Thompson, a youth volunteer for Readifest.

“It’s nice to help them out,” said another youth volunteer Danielle Easton.

“I really appreciate this. I’m glad the community helps out with people who can’t afford stuff,” said Craig Williams. “It helps out a lot.”

“It is a good way for parents of our students to talk to community booth members and prepare their children for school,” said Family Resource Coordinator for Rowan County Middle School Kay Roe.

“I love this. This is wonderful. I’m a new secretary for the Family Resource Center for Rodburn and Tilden Hogge. I had no idea they had all of this,” said Sandy Caudill.

Rowan County Schools will be in session starting Aug. 14.
