Riddle's still the answer

Nine or 10 years ago I was just a year or so into what looks to have turned into my career choice; sports writer at the local paper. And at that time, a dark-headed power hitter was prowling the batting boxes of the community Little League softball fields.

Anyone in town who had any care, or knowledge, of sports knew this kid was something special. She was pretty quick but that swing was as loud as a freight train. And now, that ability has turned into a home-run hitting express.

Rowan County Senior High School junior Amber Riddle has already staked her claim as the all-time grand slam leader in the state of Kentucky high school sports and the humble hitter is on the cusp of taking sole possession of home run hitter, period. Through Thursday of this week, Amber, the daughter of Brian and Angie, has tied the career mark with 30 round-trippers.

One more of those powerful swings will put Amber, and Head Coach Larry Slone’s Rowan County Lady Viking program, into the record book. And the ol’ community sports writer couldn’t be more tickled.

Back on the ball fields of long ago, along with everyone else in town, I took notice of this talented kid. Over the years, she and the teams she has played on have been documented and highlighted all over these few pages each week. Hopefully those images have filled the fridge door and scrapbooks, too.

Now that Amber is about the crash into the KHSAA official stat book, I wanted to take the time to single her out – and any of you who read regularly realize I don’t do that very often. I usually praise an entire team’s effort or the combined success of one of our local club’s. But in this instance, I certainly wanted to make everyone aware of this incredible young woman and all she has accomplished.

Amber, it has been a real pleasure to chronicle your time on the local fields, courts and arenas and I wanted to take the time to let you know how nice it is to cover such a determined, likeable and deserving young person!

Oh yes, and one more thing… do your ol’ sportswriter a favor, the next time you step into that chalk-lined box, go ahead and swing for the fences!
