Back in Morehead

By Leeann Tanner - Staff Writer

I began my career as a journalist by working at Morehead State Public Radio, where listeners may remember me from daily newscasts or hosting the afternoon magazine show, Mountain Edition. After working throughout my senior year, I was invited to stay on at the station as a graduate assistant. Being a single mother and juggling work and a masters degree program was quite difficult, but the experience prepared me for the fast paced real world of working in a newsroom.

To complete the MA program, I had the opportunity to intern in the most dangerous city in America: Detroit, MI. Oddly enough, crime is not a topic that was covered during my eight-week position at Detroit Public Radio. While there, I was fortunate enough to host a weekend Morning Edition, which gave me exposure in the top-10 National Market.

As a graduate of Morehead State University less than a year ago, I did not expect to find myself back in the area anytime soon…but I could not be happier. Unlike the faceless and sometimes emotionless coverage one might find in big cities, The Morehead News offers a more community-based product.

Working with a small community news organization not only allows for more attention to detail, but requires a certain fellowship with the residents. I look forward to developing close working relationships with the city and county officials, as well as our readers.

Another exciting aspect to returning to Morehead has nothing to do with my job, but with family. I did not grow up in Rowan County, but spent many weekends and holidays with my grandparents, Paul and Vileta Williamson, who live in Clearfield. Two years ago, my parents, Mike and Lorita Sublett, moved to Sharkey. Many readers may know my father through his volunteer work with the Sharkey Free Will Baptist Church. My mother has assisted many Rowan County residents at Saint Claire’s Regional Out Patient Center, where she works as a physical therapy assistant. Returning to Morehead gives us more time together as a family, and more time for them to spoil their grandson … which maybe isn’t such a good thing.

I am very excited to be the newest member of The Morehead News staff, and cannot wait to meet the neighborhood!
