Fed up with high prices

By Tonia Noe-Rose - Staff Writer

I don’t know about all of you, but I’m fed up with the price of everything! Our economy has gone to you know where, and I don’t know what’s going to happen.

I’m satisfied that the high fuel prices have caused all of this. Why can’t our government step in and help the American people before we all starve to death?

We are working to buy gas just to get back to work. And what about the price of food? A trip to the grocery store is costing at least $50 more each week. That’s a lot of money in one month’s time. I don’t see how some people with large families and low-paying jobs are keeping food on the tables and gas in their cars.

This has affected each and every one of us in ways that some people are selling out their businesses to keep their heads above water. Recently I was at the Fleming County Stock Market and witnessed a massive sell of cattle. Several trucks unloaded hundreds of dairy and beef cattle. It was said that people were selling out because they couldn’t afford to feed the animals and some were selling to pay mortgages payments.

People who have paid for years on their homes are losing them and losing their cars. I know folks who are not able to buy their much-needed medications because they can’t afford to eat, and stay well. And, some of them are just taking half doses of medicine in which to save on it. It’s just sad.

And then our president signs this stimulus package in order to help the economy. Well, by the time people get their money, they will have to use it to pay a house or car payment in order to prevent foreclosure or repossession. Or they will be paying other overdue bills to keep the bill collectors from calling every night during dinner.

And I’m sure some people will simply put it into the bank and hang on to it. You can bet, not many people will be putting it back into the economy by going shopping. They might spend a little on food and supplies, but there’s no way people will be out buying trinkets and gadgets. Not with the price of gas at nearly $4 and the price of diesel already over $4.

Every time I turn on the news they are asking the question – Are we, or are we not, in a recession? Heck yes, we are! And, our president and lawmakers need to do something about it. It’s gotten way out of hand, and all I’m hearing is hostility and bickering between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. And let’s not forget the argument as to whether John McCain is an Episcopalian or a Baptist. Why does it matter?

To be honest, I don’t care who makes office as long as he or she can stop the war and turn our economy around. In my opinion, George Bush will leave Washington as the most destructive president in history. This statement might anger some of you, but I’m sure more people will agree with me than disagree. I’ll be glad to see him gone – and just hope that whoever takes office will want to help us – If it’s not too late.
