Thanks, Mom...

It's a cryin' shame that we can only set aside 24 hours a year to officially honor Mom. After generations of wiping runny noses, bandaging bloody knees, helping mend broken hearts, sitting through the cacophony of too many off-tune band ensembles and always being available to check over home work or warm-up that Little League pitching arm - we as a nation can only manage a lone day to celebrate these remarkable human beings?....more>>

  • Riddle's still the answer
Nine or 10 years ago I was just a year or so into what looks to have turned into my career choice; sports writer at the local paper. And at that time, a dark-headed power hitter was prowling the batting boxes of the community Little League softball fields.

  • Gas prices are too high...!
The gas prices are just ridiculous. Our school system spent over $110,000 over budget on fuel to bus our children to and from school plus field trips. The prices seem to creep up higher and higher by the minute.

  • Back in Morehead
I began my career as a journalist by working at Morehead State Public Radio, where listeners may remember me from daily newscasts or hosting the afternoon magazine show, Mountain Edition.

  • Fed up with high prices
I don’t know about all of you, but I’m fed up with the price of everything! Our economy has gone to you know where, and I don’t know what’s going to happen. I’m satisfied that the high fuel prices have caused all of this.

  • Covering the president
I was privileged to cover the most historical event in the history of Morehead - the arrival of former President Bill Clinton. As I arrived at the Morehead Conference Center early that morning, I was surprised to see five people waiting for Clinton to arrive. For a very democrat area, I was shocked that very few people were outside the conference center to secure their place in line.

  • Keeping the roads safe
On March 10, I had the privilege to be assigned to write a story about the Safe patrol program and schedule a ride-along trip with the Safe patrol operators. For those who did not get the pleasure to read my article, I’ll re-cap it for you. Safe patrol is a program that is funded by the government and is a part of Homeland Security.

  • Casino gambling no quick fix for finances
To gamble or not to gamble? That is the question our state legislators are fussing over. Politics, religion and sexuality are three topics I usually avoid. However, I was reading in the Lexington Herald-Leader the other day and I came across an article “Casino debate reveals rift in House” written by the newspaper’s political writer Ryan Alessi.

  • That's how you play the game!
It was a matchup between two of the top girls’ powers in the 16th region when Rowan County hosted East Carter earlier this week. When successful teams battle in an athletic contest, especially basketball, a certain level of intensity is expected. Contact is anticipated and Aggressive play is the order of the day. All that comes with participating in contests with good teams.

  • Acts of kindness
Kindness is not a lost art. This I found to be true from my experience interviewing people who practice kindness on a regular basis. This month I interviewed a group of sweet women from Soldier, Kentucky. These women are Eva Bailey, Joann Conley and Bernice Lawson.
