Newspapers In Education; yard sale this weekend

Sure scissors, paste, computers and calculators all are school supplies. But newspapers are too!

In its’ efforts to provide newspapers with the ‘Sponsor A Classroom’ drive, The Morehead News and its sister publications will be holding a yard sale this Saturday, Sept. 8, in the paper’s parking lot. The event is part of the Newspapers In Education (NIE) program. The sale gets started at 8 a.m. and is scheduled to run until 1 p.m. All proceeds from the bake sale on site, all concession sales and the vendor fees go directly to the local NIE program.

Newspaper In Education is a program that promotes enthusiasm and pride while learning to use the newspaper as an educational tool.

Along with the upcoming sale, The Morehead News and circulation manager Andy Reber conduct several fundraisers during the year to assist in providing copies of the paper to local classrooms. Local businesses and individuals are also able to sponsor two classrooms (20 weeks for 25 students) for a small fee.

“The Newspapers In Education program really is a wonderful program for our students and our teachers,” Rowan County Middle School principal Tresia Swain said. “Our social studies teachers use the paper as a teaching tool each week. And many of our students are happy to get the opportunity to see the paper if they don’t have subscriptions at home.”

While the program certainly assists teachers by providing the free copies of The Morehead News, the students also get a kick out of seeing themselves in the paper, according to Swain.

“They are thrilled to see themselves or coverage of their school in the paper,” she said. “And when our students are featured in the paper, we display that coverage here in the school.”

Deadline for vendor spots for the NIE yard sale at The Morehead News is Thursday, Sept. 6. Vendor set-up will be 6 – 7:45 a.m. the morning of the sale, Saturday, Sept. 8.

“Through the NIE program, copies of The Morehead News are provided to local schools upon the request of teachers – and they will receive those papers weekly throughout the school year for 20 weeks at no charge to them, their school or their students,” Reber said. “They will also receive curriculum ideas and tools to help promote the Newspapers In Education program.”

For information on the NIE yard sale, or for more information on how to sponsor a local classroom, call The Morehead News, 606-784-4116.

See you at the sale!
