Denver Brown, the former sports editor of The Morehead News, has been named executive editor of the local paper and its sister publications The Grayson Journal and The Olive Hill Times.
After manning the sports desk in Morehead from 1998 until January 2006, Brown was promoted to managing editor of the newspapers in Carter County. As executive editor, he will oversee the editorial content of all three community newspapers.
“Working in community newspapers is just what I love to do,” Brown said. “I love being out in the community and going to ball games and listening to readers talk about our papers. I look forward to this opportunity and I am very excited about being back in Morehead on a daily basis. While I have enjoyed working with our papers in Olive Hill and Grayson I have missed being here – the years I spent covering sports in Morehead and Rowan County are about the best I’ve had in nearly 15 years in community journalism.”
A 1991 graduate of the University of Kentucky and a native of Dayton, Brown has won numerous Kentucky Press Association awards for writing, photography and design at all three area papers.
Brown will work with the editorial staffs at the three papers while working to increase circulation.
“What makes this job so rewarding is the people I have the opportunity to work with,” Brown said. “It takes long hours to attend meetings, type stories, design pages, interview student-athletes… and the entire staff of The Morehead News group is proud of our paper. And we are proud to be part of the community. I had a journalism professor back in school tell me that you’re lucky if you ever get to have a job you enjoy – so I’m the luckiest person in the world because I love my job, I love my coworkers and I love being a part of this community.”
Brown will split his time in the Morehead office and the offices in Olive Hill and Grayson.
