As of Wednesday at noon, county workers remained off the job until further notice.
When four Rowan County magistrates didn’t agree with Judge-executive Jim Nickell’s recommendations for county employees Tuesday, 21 employees were handed layoff slips.
According to Nickell, Nick Caudill, Troy Perkins, Jerry Flannery and Ray White, did not approve of Nickell’s list of county employees, which caused the sudden layoffs.
Nickell said Wednesday that he had spoken with the magistrates who told him they remained in disagreement with his recommendations of county employees.
“As of today they said they would not approve my list,” Nickell said. “We do want the people in the county to know that all the offices are open and we do have people helping out where needed.”
Magistrate Nick Caudill said Wednesday that he had not been notified of a special-called meeting in order to resolve the matter.
Among those to receive layoff slips were all employees of the county road department and three county government support staff, Nickell said.
County employees not affected by the layoffs include the county treasurer and road department foreman, who both are appointed officials, and the county attorney who is an elected official.
